West Coast Trip: Newport, Oregon

We left the Redwoods and headed to Newport, Oregon.  It was about a four hour drive.  This campground felt a lot more like a normal campground.  We didn't have a ton of privacy but Phin didn't seem to mind.

He loved running around with his cousins.

After dinner we took a walk down to the beach.

This is quite possibly my favorite picture from the trip.  Please ignore Phin's dirty face...after all we were camping.

Phin ran back up the sand dune hoping he would find his cousins.

We did run into the cousins as they were headed to the beach and we were headed back.  In the background you can see the Newport bridge.

The next morning we got a fairly early start.  We planned to go to the Hatfield Science Center but it wasn't open yet...so we wandered around a little touristy area.

Phin wasn't thrilled about the idea of the shark eating his limbs.

The Hatfield Science Center was pretty amazing.  It is an extension of Oregon State University.  We got to touch sea urchins and starfish.

There were tons of hands on exhibits.

One of our favorites had to do with tsunamis.

We left the Science Center and headed North to the Yaquina Head Lighthouse.

There were tide pools that were amazing at this site.

Can you spot the starfish?

How about the seals in the background?

We even got to climb to the top of the lighthouse.  I love this picture because Phin is knocking on the lighthouse door before our tour.

These are the containers that the oil would have been stored in.  It is hard to imagine someone carrying this up the stairs each day.

We weren't able to take Phin to the top...so I went up first and then when I got down Seth took a turn.

There were some pretty spectacular crystals.

After the lighthouse we headed down to the beach.

Seth stopped by a kite shop and bought another trainer kite which he had a great time flying.

Our final stop of night was down by where all the fish is delivered in the bay.

We had dinner at Mo's.  I enjoyed the halibut fish and chips...Seth loved the blackened salmon...and Phin was pretty excited about the shark that came on top of his water.
